Project lead Markéta Švarcová commented on the ongoing transposition of the so-called Platform Work Directive in Hospodářské noviny. She pointed out, among other things, that digital platforms systematically deny the existence of dependent employment and present their workers as “independent entrepreneurs”, even though their day-to-day work is in fact governed by algorithms, penalties, and unilateral rules. At the same time, she emphasised that the European Directive introduces a key tool in the form of a rebuttable presumption of an employment relationship and human oversight of algorithms – mechanisms that can meaningfully improve the working conditions of people working through digital platforms.
