Sociologist Markéta Švarcová has published an essay that situates the phenomenon of platform work within the broader context of structural gender inequalities. She shows that the pressure for flexibility often falls unevenly—particularly on women and mothers, whose employment opportunities are constrained by the persistent gender division of labor and the lack of care institutions. The essay also points out that small entrepreneurship and work via digital platforms are not always a choice of freedom, but often a strategy based on necessity. Therefore, according to Švarcová, it is essential to think about working conditions in a more comprehensive way and to seek ways to strengthen workers’ security as well as gender equality.
